They are just another part of games to make them more interesting. Sometimes people may get bored of a game, but still want to complete all of the achievements so they will continue playing until they have all of the points. I prefer to just play the game, but sometimes I will go for achievement points.

Achievement points reward you for playing the game. It is just cosmetic and that's it.
