Thread: PlayStation 4 set for E3 2012 reveal?

Sony will also "show" its new console - presumably PlayStation 4 - at the annual E3 expo this summer, a foil-wrap-fresh report has claimed.

UK trade website MCV provided no further information. The tip apparently came from an "exemplary" and "ultra high level" source.

"Obviously we can't reveal our sources," wrote MCV writer Ben Parfitt on Twitter. "But you have my personal word on this - the source is exemplary, 100 per cent concrete, ultra high level."

He added: "Really, really wish I could name him/her/them/it but obviously cannot."

Sony UK told Eurogamer this morning that "we don't comment on rumour and speculation".

Microsoft is widely expected to show a new Xbox - or two - at E3 2012. And an announcement may come even earlier - as soon as next week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Has knowledge of a new Xbox forced Sony's hand - a company that has been outspoken about its long-term, 10-year plan for PlayStation 3?

Jim Ryan, PlayStation Euro boss, suggested so - telling Eurogamer in November that it would be "undesirable" to concede another head start advantage to Microsoft with the next generation of consoles.

What an odd, waterfall-like situation it would be if Sony had rushed to dilute Microsoft's thunder - only to discover that Microsoft had itself rushed to dilute Nintendo's Wii U thunder. What fantastic machinery we'd be sold as a result.

If this report does turn out to be true, Sony may have little more to show of PS4 at E3 than target renders and a basic strategy - an announcement rather than a reveal, if you like. Cast your mind back to E3 2005 and the infamous target render footage of Killzone 2 on PS3 for an idea of what to expect.

Microsoft is expected to launch the next generation Xbox around Christmas 2013. A PS4 may be further off, judging by Sony's recent commitment to The Last of Us - a likely 2013 PS3 exclusive built by Uncharted maker Naughty Dog.

I read this on IGN today, was thoroughly disappointed. I wanted to PS3 to last longer, but Sony is just worried about their marketshare and not their consumers... *sigh*

Of course they are worried about Marketshare. Also, I think they want to hurry up production of PS4 because New Xbox version is coming this or next year for sure.

Exactly, thats what i meant with the worried about marketshare part, with all the hype about a new xBox console, they have to come out with something or they would potentially loose, unless the new XBox can compete with the PS3 hardware wise though, i dont see it as a big threat

Don't find this surprising at all, but again any one could have guessed this. I mean 2013 seems to be a pretty good year for new consoles to come out. That or possibly early 2014.

Like most new consoles that debut. I'll probably wait for a later version. The Vita is actually the first console I'm going out to buy on release day. I never, ever bought consoles on release. The Vita is the only exception. I'll still be waiting for the PS4 for at least 6 months after it's released. Gives it time to pump out a few more titles for it and such.

It's decent time, why not. They are worried about the market as you already said. I just think this will quicken the release of PS5 one day cause I still think PS3 didn't reach out it's maximum potential.

I'm a little annoyed by this, primarily because it comes at a time when I'm poor and unemployed.

That said, I can understand why Sony is doing it. In this bad economic recession they can't afford to let Microsoft or any other opponents get any further ahead and take away their market share. They need all the customers they can get. Plus, the PS4 being announced in 2012 probably means it won't be out before 2013. Probably around the Christmas Season, so we still have plenty of time to get the best out of the PS3 before then.

to me, i still think its too early. all of these stuff they having release on the ps3, it should be release around 2014 or 2015. look at all the stuff you can do on the ps3. what more can you do?

Well we all have to agree it's mostly cause of the recession.
