What is the benefit of Playstation Plus?

I paid for a year of Playstation Plus. I thought I would download something and my PS3 would change (or something). Nothing really happened.

I gained access to about 3 or 4 free games and avatars plus some 60 hour free trials but nothing so special. Did I just blow my money? Is there any other benefit to PS3 Plus?

Nothing much, seems like a waste of money. Here is what the PSN page says:

Games: enjoy loads of PlayStation Network games, minis and PS one classics plus premium avatars and dynamic themes, all worth at least £200* a year. You'll also get exclusive PlayStation Store discounts and early access to demos and beta trials. Content is updated every month on PlayStation Store, so there will always be something new to enjoy.
Full Game Trial: try before you buy with a one-hour trial of selected PlayStation Network titles and Blu-ray Disc releases.
Automatic Download: receive the latest PS3 system software updates, all your game updates and even game demos without lifting a finger.

I thought I read somewhere that PSN Plus enables cross game talk meaning you can chat with friends regardless of what game they are in.

They will provide you free games but under your subscription. so until you were subscribed no need to worry but all the games will be deactivate if unsubscribed. also a discount on playstation store.

Premium dynamic themes for your system, premium avatars and premium game add-ons will also be available for free download with a subscription. These will remain yours even if you cancel your subscription.

Honestly in my opinion its just the waste of money. 60 minute trials are not even worth man, you waste like 2-3 hours to download it then extra 2-3 hours to install the big game, then you play for 60 minutes and its gone. Waste of space and time in my opinion, and honestly all you get is like $1-3 discounts which in my opinion is not a big deal as I am sure not many people buy or waste money on themes and avatars anyways.

As a person that has actually purchased PSN, I completely agree with this. I feel as though I've wasted my money.

But seriously, PS3 needs partychat of some sort, its annoying not being able to talk to a few freinds on PS3 because i'm playing an obscure title

There's not much on it. Mainly a waste of money, gets you DEMOS for MONEY?, some themes, graphic art and automatic updates. The only thing it does is helping you not to spend 2h/6 months updating your PS.

I agree 100%. PSN doesn't have communication correct. The Xbox has it down pat. You get a message, click the X button and it takes you there. You can join a party, chat, etc. regardless of game. PSN.... Pain in the ass and the quality of chatting isn't as good IMO.
