Haha, free games was one of the strongest statements that got me into it, but I like modding because I think it's fun to run into a challenge from time to time. I just like modding in general because it's cool to learn new things from the community and then have yourself try to attempt them.

Yeah, that's pretty much it..as Anthrax said. The downside is you can't update your software regularly and there are many complications on the way.
