The only problem I see with long distance relationships is that these people are only attracted to the idea of the other person, not the person themselves. They are using each other for personal validation, like a trophy. If you've never met someone face to face then there is a lot you really don't know about them, so how much can you really say you like them and not just the idea of them? There are a lot of blanks that the internet leaves which are easy to fill in for the sake of fantasy, but relationships are not and should not be fantasies.

If you're willing to give up something like seeing someone you really like in person then that just shows that you are just desperate to be in a relationship at any cost for your own sake. That's self-focused thinking and not the mindset a real relationship is based around.

Sure, it's always nice to have a mutual fondness of someone else online or off, but I think it's pretty retarded to try and call that a real 'relationship'.

I've heard of few people actually going out and 1 couple even married, but the idea is mostly like Omar explained it. 99% from those people aren't really interested in the other person.

Just going out on a limb here, but i'm guessing these 'friendships' created online are just a jumping off point. Like testing the water. No one is saying it will go anywhere. It's just a way to meet someone with common interests, which is not always possible to do locally, depending on where you live. And, most times if it does last more than a couple weeks, the two people take efforts to know each other offline via phone, Skype, webcam, meeting in person. Just like you would if you used an internet dating site. You would just test the waters with the other person and then if you liked that initial meeting you would take it to real life.
