Any media player will do as long as you have the right codecs installed. All you need to do is install the latest version of CCCP or Combined Community Codec Pack, and you can now play MKV files on either Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic.

VLC Media Player is the best and free media player available to play almost anything on your PC. I would suggest VLC.

I honestly don't suggest VLC. 10bit videos don't work there most of the time. The best in my books is still Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

I find VLC very poor in terms of UI, but one of the best in terms of performance. The latest update is seeming to be slightly buggy though, porblems with video colors, aspect ratio etc.
Apart from VLC, GOM Player is pretty good as well.
