When I was growing up I always went with the cheapest CPU which was Cyrix (IBM) at the time I started building my own comps and then when they went out of business I went with AMD. Then when I started working where I work now many years ago, they used only Intel. I felt these were better and also back then they ran much, much cooler than the AMDs which could cook an egg. About 1-2 years ago I built an i7 (Asus Mobo, 12gb ram) and it simply ROCKs. However, I just ordered an AMD phenom II (4 core) which I've read is awesome (I bought a cheap POS ECS mobo though) although I'll keep my i7 as my main machine and use this AMD Phenom as a my remote desktop box (I currently have a dual core Dell AMD for this purpose).

In the end? I'm not sure there is much difference although I'm seeing benchmark tests show that Intel still beats AMD but for the price you pay and the fact that you probably will not notice the difference, is it worth it? Should one just get the AMD?

I'll tell you what I do hate is AMD ATI . I've hated ATI ever since I switched to Linux back in my teens and they refused to deliver decent Linux drivers. Their shitty drivers made life suck until I switched to nVidida and I'll never go back because of this.

Okay, I agree about ATI thing. They really indeed suck when we talk about drivers. I mean, they release new drivers every day.
When graphics cards, I go with nVidia no matter what.

What I have to say is that AMD is a budget buy. Does that make them worse? No but I believe that if you have the money then go Intel because their CPU set up is strong and very, very efficient given the price.

ATI vs. NVIDIA though: NVIDIA wins in my book hands down. Their cards stay cooler, work better, they update their drivers more and they require less power. ATI is good but you have to buy high end just to get as close to as good as NVIDIA can which is hard because I don't know a lot of people who would be willing to pay $1000 for a HD 6990 graphics card which you have do the same performance from a GTX 570 for 1/3 of the price.
