Does anyone have fond memories of MS-DOS games?
In 2011, more than half of us PC users depend on Microsoft Windows OSs (XP, Vista, Windows 7), and youngsters under the age of 18 probably have never used a computer which uses anything older than Windows 98, but I remember a time when MS-DOS was the standard operating system that ran what were then called "IBM clones" (because the term PC used to mean, natch, the IBM PC).
Back then, I used to play such fun games as M-1 Tank Platoon, Sid Meier's Civilization (the first version), the first three entries of the F-15 Strike Eagle series of flight sims, Star Trek: The 25th Anniversary game and Red Storm Rising. Those were pretty good games for their time and each one raised the bar for game play and graphics which evolved over time as CPUs went from the 386 series of Intel chips to the first Pentiums.

Ironically, i used MS-Dos until 2004. Or, at least that's when I got my first Windows based computer. Before then, just MS-Dos. Still i can't remember playing any Dos games.

I used to play some DOS MUDs way back before MMOs were cool. I loved it! Sometimes I miss the old basic games like that but it's great to watch games evolve.

Re: Does anyone have fond memories of MS-DOS games?
I used to have F-117A Nighthawk by MicroProse, which was actually an upgraded reboot of their F-19 Stealth Fighter game. They upgraded the game and changed the title because the F-19 Ghostrider aircraft (which was depicted in Tom Clancy's novel Red Storm Rising) was actually a bit of Pentagon misinformation to hide the real Stealth fighters' configuration and capabilities. Once the real F-117A was revealed to the public, MicroProse "simply" retooled the graphics a bit, added both a fictional version of the F-117 (with air-to-air capabilities) and a realistic air-to-ground only one, and added real-life Persian Gulf War scenarios to the existing F-19 missions.

Hmm. Well, if you’re younger than, say, 20 years of age it’s possible that you’ve never had to use any computer operating system that existed before, oh, Windows 95. I started using computers in the mid to late 1980s, so I remember such things as MS-DOS versions (I think the last one I had was MS-DOS 5.0), 5.25-inch floppy disks, external disk drives, boot up disks for games and games that required three or more “installation” disks.

Re: Does anyone have fond memories of MS-DOS games?
That pretty much explains it! In some ways, you missed out on the start of a few cool game franchises, such as the F-15 Strike Eagle series and the first version of Civilization, but we can't choose the eras in which we are born, right? I'm old enough to (vaguely) remember the first moon landings, Watergate, Vietnam, and watching (still) some news programs in black and white TV.
