An immortal demon hunter who has the ability to detach limbs and is trying to stop a full scale demonic invasion of a city! Sounds like the premise of an exciting block buster game doesn’t it? Well this avid gamer thought so too, but alas the latest offering from Konami titled “Never Dead” leaves a lot to be desired.

Released on 31st January, simultaneously for the Xbox and PS3 platform, “Never Dead” stars Bryce Boltzmann as the main protagonist of the game. The main plot of the game takes place five centuries ago when Bryce was cursed with immortality by the demon king Astarot who also murdered his wife. The rest is quite predictable, Bryce becomes a demon hunter killing demons where he can find them and stumbles through history and has supposedly funny encounters involving historic figures and occasions.

This is an action shooter game with a few puzzle elements thrown in. The level design and the backdrop scenery is nothing special to write about. The sound track however provided by the metal group “Megadeth”, is inspiring and somewhat of a redeeming factor.

Bryce is aided in his quest to stop the demonic invasion by a female investigator named Arcadia Maximille. Arcadia is depicted as being self centered and methodical, which I think is an attempt by the designers to balance out Bryce’s wise cracking nature! During the actual game play Bryce is able to withstand tremendous physical damage whereas Arcadia is very prone to it. This particular scenario reminds this gamer of a recently played game by the name of “Enslaved” by Namco which has somewhat of the same game mechanics. It seems like Konami got their “inspiration” from it.

If Konami was hoping that this venture of theirs would be the next big thing in the gaming genre of limb dismemberment and regeneration, (as if there are recognizable titles there) they sadly fell short. The story line lacks depth and so does the character development of the protagonist. Astarot however has some redeeming qualities and is responsible for a few chuckles in the game. Overall Never Dead is an average game and has so far garnered mediocre ratings by most game sites. However, this does not mean you should place it back on the rack! The game provides quite a few laughs and can be quite enjoyable to play if you have the time.

Have yet to play this one. It sounds pretty interesting and I love the title name. Only time will tell though if I actually play it.
