The gaming world since the departure of 2011 till now was being dominated by RPG games like the behemoth from Bethesda Skyrim and the most recent kingdoms of Amalur. Although immensely enjoyable and highly addictive, these games left me yearning for some good old fashioned FPS! Seems like 2K games realized this and released Darkness II. Darkness II is the sequel to 2007 game, The Darkness, and is being penned by Paul Jenkins who authored comics of the same name. The game is available for PC, Xbox and PS3.

Darkness II follows the escapades of the protagonist Jackie Estacado and takes places two years after the culmination of the first game. Jackie using the darkness has now become the head of the Franchetti crime family. Still mourning the loss of his girlfriend and juggling to keep the darkness contained which wants to be let lose in the world makes a very enjoyable game premise.

The game mechanics has been tweaked and new features such as “Quad Wielding” have been introduced, this allows Jackie to go berserk using both the darkness and firearms. This feature was missing in the first game where the protagonist could only wield a firearm or darkness at a time. Other features include the darkling bestowing Jackie with powers like leading to waypoints, killing opponents from distance and reaching hard to get areas.

Vendetta Game Mode
What’s the head of a criminal family without a few hit men at his disposal! In the vendetta game mode, the player gets to play as one of the hit men being sent forth by Jackie to secure dark relics. It goes without saying that these hit men are aided in their mission by specific darkness bestowed abilities.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Darkness II mainly because of its well tweaked game mechanics and alternative mode which goes parallel to the game story and secondly because it provided a respite from RPG games that had thronged the market.
