Hardcore is a game mode which has been in many call of duty games to date, serving as an
alternative game type option, for players looking for a more "hardcore" experience. The exact rules of Hardcore differ from game to game, as well as game type to game type, however the rules will generally include most of the below, which are the black ops hardcore standard:
Lowered health (most players see this as increased bullet damage, however this is not true) - This lowers your health to 30% of its rgular in normal game modes, resulting in most guns being a one bullet kill.
No radar or HUD - Most of the HUD (heads up display) is missing, meaning no radar (although this can be seen by pressing start assuming no counter spy plane is up, and the radar is available again if a spy plane is deployed) no ammo counter, no points popping up when you get a kill or assist or capture.
Friendly fire enabled - In team based hardcore modes, firing at team mates will result in their deaths (and -100 points) however this is lightly controlled to stop team killing, such as only bnecoming activated after the first 15 seconds in search and destroy. All of these features combined make the hardcore mode feel, which is the very unique atmosphere which makes many players fall for it, as it creates a very quiet, "realistic" atmosphere, and reduces the ammount of time (and therefore the reflex "skill" needed is greatly increased) from starting to finishing a kill.
Black ops currently has five hardcore game modes, three of which are completely counted as their own game mode, through challenges and leaderboards (the latter two were added in a patch, and therefore not fully incorporated into the game, at time of writing). The hardcore game modes are; hardcore free for all, hardcore team deathmatch, hardcore search and destroy, hardcore headquarters, and hardcore capture the flag. Although there is many hardcore elements needed to play this game modes, i will mostly be focussing on how to effectively kill other players and a few basic principles for objectives, so is mostly useful for hardcore free for all, team deathmatch and search and destroy, as these modes are best suied to my guide.
ideal class for hardcore
If you are playing hardcore, it is reccommended you create classes specifically for it, as many perks and attachments which apply for regular game modes, do not apply for hardcore, such as a supressor, which is less useful as there is no radar on the HUD. Killstreaks also should have a different focus, mainly due to the fact that many players traditionally have ghost or ghost pro on, which makes many killstreaks useless.
First perk: in the first perk slot you should have ghost pro on (ghost by itself is mostly useless) although flak jacket is very useful as it caps the max damage explosions can do to you, even in hardcore. Scavenger is no needed here, as you use less ammo anyway.
second perk: If you do not plan on using warlord of sleight of hand, steady aim (as well as steady aim pro) would be very useful. as at close range one bullet is all it takes, and hip firing gives you a serious advantage in getting your bullets fired first. Hardened is all but useless as players have very low health anyway, and the extra bullet needed to fire through a wall is not worth sacrficing a perk.
Third perk: Ninja pro would be good here, as many players use headsets to hear footsteps in hardcore, as the game in general is quieter and less distracting. Hacker would be a good alternative as it allows you to see enemy positions.
Lethal: if you are a fan of the tomahawk, it has least use in hardcore, as most other things are one hit, so only the real tomahawk pro's should use it. Otherwise, a frag or semtex will work fine.
Tactical: Nova gas can be particularly deadly here, but a flashbang or concussion grenade will do great also
Equipment: All of the equipment have their own pro's and cons, these are only slightly changed for hardcore, with the motion sensor becoming less useful as you must press start to view it, and the camera spike becomes more useful as there is no radar being wasted by it.
Primary Weapon: there is not too much to say here, besides the near uselessness of snipers, and the increased prevalence of sub machine guns. Pick a gun you can use and get good with it.
Secondary Weapon: Pistol(s). No doubt about it. Hardcore is not the place for launchers or fancy ballistic knife kills. A personal favourite secondary would be the python with a speed re-loader, as it maintains 1 hit kills at most ranges, and is switched to with insane speed.
Thank you for reading my Black ops class creation guide, i hope it helps you!
